President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Edward Kwaku Asomani as the new National Security Coordinator. This was contained in a latest announcement effecting changes at the leadership level of the national security apparatus.
Mr Asomani’s appointment takes effect today, August 8, 2022. A statement issued by the Director of Communications at the Office of the President, Eugene Arhin, said “In accordance with Section 20 (1) of the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2020 (Act 1030), President Akufo-Addo has subsequently appointed Edward Asomani, Deputy National Security Co-ordinator, to act as National Security Coordinator, with effect from Monday, 8 August 2022.
“The confirmation of his appointment is subject to the receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the National Security Council, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission,” portions of the statement read.
The statement added: “Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Francis Adu-Amanfoh, who was the national security coordinator, has been reassigned by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to act as special advisor to the President for the Accra Initiative”.
The Accra Initiative was launched in September 2017 by Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire as a vehicle for enhanced security cooperation amongst the countries, in response to the growing threats of terrorism and violent extremism in West Africa.
About Asomani
Mr Edward Asomani was appointed as Deputy National Security Coordinator in February last year. Prior to his appointment, he was the Director of Analysis at the Ministry of National Security. Some experts believe that having a National Security Coordinator who has grown through the ranks would boost the morale of personnel and enhance the country’s security, particularly, at a time Ghana is faced with growing terrorism threats in the West African sub-region.
An Alumnus of Oxford University, he worked in a number of reputable international organisations in England before returning to Ghana to take up a position as the Executive Director of Danquah Institute.
NIB changes
Meanwhile, the President has appointed Nana Attobrah Quaicoe, Deputy Director-General of National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), formerly Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI), to act as Director-General of the NIB. His appointment takes effect from today.
Nana Attobrah Quaicoe’s confirmation is also subject to the receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the National Security Council, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
His former boss, Kwaku Domfeh, has been reassigned as Ambassador-designate to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
