The Registrar of Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Mr Kingsley Agyemang, has made a strong case for Ghana to be considered the prime beneficiary of Spain’s educational investments in Africa.
According to him, Spain stands to gain a lot through partnering with Ghana in terms of educational collaboration.
He said this on Monday when he delivered a speech at the Spain-Africa Academic Corporation seminar held in Madrid, Spain.
Mr Agyemang, who joined other academics from different tertiary institutions and education sponsors, said Ghana will be the ideal destination for Spain.
“I urged them to fervently look at Ghana as the gateway to sub-Saharan Africa since Ghana, through the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, has had these bilateral ties with other countries since 1960,” he told the media on the sidelines of the seminar.
Need for scholarships
He again underscored the need for scholarships, arguing that it is the only way to make sure that the African continent produces scholars.
“Scholarships or sponsorships make it possible for African bright young minds to stay in school. The funds help cover tuition, books, school supplies, uniforms, and other school-related costs. By providing a scholarship to an African student, we offer a promise to the student that what they do in school has meaning, and they will have the reinforcement they need,” he said.
He added that scholarships allow for future educational planning and continuous support.
“When a student receives a scholarship to attend school, he or she is less likely to drop out of school. When a student is offered consistent support, he or she has the confidence to thrive intellectually,” he posited.
Mr Agyemang further called for the empowerment of “our future generation with the ability to participate actively, creatively and comprehensively in the information economy where they will use pertinent information to create the knowledge surplus that is needed to transform society.”
“Our first step towards that goal should be to change from overtly academic and theoretical orientations to workplace educational and training programmes,” he noted.
