The Ghana Police Service and the nation paid their final respects to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) J. Y. A. Kwofie in a state funeral held at the State House in Accra yesterday. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, police personnel, and members of the public who gathered to honor the late IGP’s contributions to Ghana’s law enforcement and public service.
J. Y. A. Kwofie, who served as the IGP from January 1, 1990, to September 30, 1996, passed away on May 2, 2024, at the age of over 90. His tenure was marked by significant reforms and dedication to improving the Ghana Police Service. Following his leadership, Peter Tenganabang Nanfuri succeeded him as IGP; Nanfuri also passed away in February 2023.
In addition to his role as IGP, Mr. Kwofie was a distinguished figure in Ghana’s public service, having served as Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. His impact on both the police force and customs administration left a lasting legacy.
During the state funeral, leaders and former colleagues reflected on Mr. Kwofie’s exemplary service and the values he embodied. Tributes highlighted his commitment to justice, integrity, and the advancement of the police force’s capabilities.
