Residents of Takoradi on Sunday predicted the ruling NPP’s victory in this year’s election after witnessing a mammoth ‘victory walk’ organised by Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for the constituency.
Some passers-by who witnessed the walk were heard saying ‘December 7 is a done deal for NPP’.
They reiterated that the party has performed creditably in its first term, and will undoubtedly secure ‘four more years to do more’.
According to some of the residents, there are clear indications that former President John Dramani Mahama and his opposition NDC will lose the December 7 polls, and therefore advised the opposition party to stop wasting time and resources on campaign.
They said Ghanaians have seen the good works of the Akufo-Addo-led government, and have consequently settled on NPP ahead of the general elections.
Victory walk
Numbering over 2000, the enthusiastic party youth carried placards some of which read “Free SHS for all”; “Nurses Trainees Allowances paid”; “Construction of Historic Takoradi Interchange”; “Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment on course”; “NPP, You do all”, among others.
The three-hour exercise, which started at the Asempa Hotel in the morning, took the NPP members through the principal streets to New Takoradi, and ended at Kobby’s Park, Esikafoammbantem No. 1, where a mini-rally was held and free medical screening also organised for them.
Party gurus in and outside Western Region, including Ndede Siah, the regional NPP chairman; George Mireku Duker, the Tarkwa-Nsuem MP; Joseph Cudjoe, MP for Efia and a Deputy Energy Minister; Augustine Blay, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice-President; and Isaac Armoo, a former MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, in the Greater Accra region, who took part in the walk, addressed the crowd.
Vigilance
Mr Armoo reminded party members that the “four more for Nana, four more for MPs” mantra will never be a reality if polling station agents fail to be vigilant on the day of the election.
He said the desperate NDC will resort to all sorts of foul means such as swapping or doctoring of pink sheets to win the forthcoming general elections, urging members of the NPP to ‘shine’ their eyes.
Using his story, where the NDC teamed up with the EC to rig the 1996 Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat in favour of Rebecca Adotey, as an example, Mr Armoo said the opposition party hasn’t changed and can do it again.
On his part, Mr Augustine Blay noted that NPP is the only party which has the interest and well-being of Ghanaians at heart, and cautioned the citizenry against returning the opposition party to office.
Agenda 50,000
In a brief address, the Western Regional Minister said Takoradi constituency has set an “Agenda 50,000” votes in December and will leave no stone unturned in achieving that.
He said “jobs will flow like waters of the Nile in Western Region”, particularly in Sekondi-Takoradi, under the next NPP government, thanks to the port expansion programme, the PTC interchange, Market Circle redevelopment and other projects being undertaken by government.
