New Patriotic Party National Chairman hopeful Boakye Agyarko has called on the party to anchor its rebuilding and renewal in the founding principles of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
In a statement marking the UGCC’s 79th anniversary on August 4, 2026, Mr Agyarko said the organisation established the foundation of the political tradition now represented by the NPP.
He recalled that 79 years ago, a group of nationalist leaders gathered at Saltpond to establish the UGCC and advance Ghana’s struggle for freedom.
According to him, the UGCC was more than a political organisation. It represented a movement founded on liberty, justice and the rule of law.
“These foundational principles have shaped my own political journey and continue to serve as the heartbeat of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.
Politics must serve the people
Mr Agyarko said Ghana’s democratic stability was a direct inheritance from the courage and sacrifices of the country’s forebears.
He maintained that their legacy should remind political leaders that politics must not be reduced to the pursuit of personal interests or merely winning political power.
He said the true purpose of politics was the honest, diligent and faithful service of the people, urging current leaders to uphold the high standards of leadership established by the country’s founders.
Call to rebuild
The former Energy Minister described the anniversary as more than a remembrance, stressing that it should serve as a call to duty.
He said the NPP was navigating a defining period of organisational rebuilding and renewal and must therefore revisit the original convictions of its founders with clarity and purpose.
Mr Agyarko urged members of the political tradition to remain steadfast and work together to build a stronger, more resilient and united Ghana.
“Let us carry the torch of our founders with renewed determination,” he said.
