The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana, an advocacy group promoting the sustainability of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Free Senior High School (SHS) educational policy, engaged residents of Bradzie in the Cape Coast North Constituency on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The interaction took place during a traditional marriage ceremony in the community.
The event saw the presence of Hon. Ekow Ewusi, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Cape Coast North, who contributed an undisclosed amount of cash to the newlyweds and offered prayers for their union.
Call to Protect Free SHS
Addressing attendees at the gathering, members of the University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana emphasized the critical role of the Free SHS policy in improving access to education across Ghana. They highlighted the transformative impact the program has had, particularly in underserved areas, and underscored the importance of safeguarding its continuation.
The teachers group pointed out that the Free SHS initiative has become a lifeline for many Ghanaian families. “This program has provided opportunities for thousands of students who otherwise would not have had access to quality education due to financial constraints,” they remarked.
They argued that the Free SHS policy is not merely an educational intervention but a cornerstone for Ghana’s socio-economic development. He appealed to the residents to ensure its continuity by supporting the NPP in the upcoming December general elections.
Criticism of Mahama’s Record
The advocacy group strongly criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for what they described as a lack of commitment to free education.
They recalled that the Mahama-led administration failed to implement its own proposed “progressive free education” program and consistently opposed the introduction of the Free SHS initiative by the NPP. “Mahama cannot be relied upon to protect or enhance the Free SHS initiative. His record on education policies demonstrates a lack of vision and consistency,” they said.
The group urged residents to reflect on the benefits the policy has brought to their families and communities and to vote accordingly.
Appeal to Bradzie Residents
The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana appealed to the Bradzie community to exercise their voting power wisely in the December elections. They called on them to “use their thumbs to protect Free SHS” by voting.g for the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast North, Hon. Ekow Ewusi.
“This election is about the future of your children and their access to quality education. Let us not gamble with what we have achieved. Vote NPP to secure and enhance the Free SHS program,” they emphasized.
Hon. Ekow Ewusi’s Gesture
Hon. Ekow Ewusi, while addressing the gathering, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting educational initiatives and the welfare of his constituents. His gesture of goodwill toward the newlyweds earned applause from the community, symbolizing his dedication to uplifting local families.
The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana’s engagement forms part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about the importance of the Free SHS policy and mobilize electoral support for the NPP.
