The teachers celebrate at graduation ceremony of Augustina Mensah, a seamstress who had completed a vocational training program
The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana, an advocacy group championing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) free SHS educational policy, engaged the residents of Anyinase, a sub-district in the Akyemansa District of the Central Region, during a community event on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
Led by Hon. Ekow Ewusi, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Cape Coast North, the group attended the graduation ceremony of Augustina Mensah, a seamstress who had completed a vocational training program. The event served as a platform for the group to promote the formalization of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and its potential to empower young individuals and drive economic growth.
Supporting Small Businesses
As part of the occasion, Hon. Ewusi presented the newly graduated seamstress with a sewing machine and an undisclosed amount of cash to help her kick-start her business. The gesture, he explained, was in line with the NPP’s vision of equipping young artisans with the tools and resources needed to establish sustainable livelihoods.
TVET Formalization
Addressing the attendees, members of the University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana highlighted the NPP government’s efforts to formalize and modernize TVET in Ghana. They underscored the importance of vocational skills in building a productive workforce and reducing unemployment.
“The formalization of TVET is a cornerstone of the NPP’s agenda to empower the youth. Through the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, we aim to ensure that young tailors, seamstresses, and artisans in general, are not only skilled but have access to resources and opportunities to thrive,” the teachers group stated.
The group emphasized that under the NPP government, TVET has seen significant investment, including the upgrading of training institutions, the introduction of standardized certification processes, and initiatives to integrate vocational skills into Ghana’s broader economic framework.
Call to Action
The teachers encouraged the constituents to support the vision of the NPP by voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as President and Hon. Ekow Ewusi as the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North in the December 2024 general elections.
“Dr. Bawumia and Hon. Ekow Ewusi are committed to seeing every young tailor, dressmaker, and artisan reach their full potential. This commitment is not just for individual benefit but for the growth of families and the entire country,” they remarked.
Gratitude from the Beneficiary
Expressing her appreciation, Augustina Mensah thanked the teachers and Hon. Ewusi for their generosity and encouragement. “This support means so much to me and my family. The sewing machine and the financial assistance will enable me to start my journey as a seamstress. I am truly grateful,” she said.
Broader Advocacy
The group said their visit to Anyinase forms part of a broader campaign by the University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana to promote the NPP’s educational and vocational initiatives across various communities. They added that their outreach aims to deepen public understanding of the Free SHS policy, TVET formalization, and other transformative programs spearheaded by the NPP government.
