A 39-year-old hunter at Essaman in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, Francis Kwesi Tachie, is in police custody for mistakenly shooting a colleague, Andy Koranchie, during hunting expedition.
Tachie, who reported and handed himself over to the police after his ordeal, is helping in further investigation. The body of the victim, Andy Koranchie, has been deposited at the morgue.
Reports indicate that this is the first time in the history of Wassa-Essaman that such an unfortunate incident had occurred.
The predominantly farming community is, therefore, in shock with resident wondering why Tachie could take the life of his own friend.
Suspicions
While some suspects he might have had an issue with Koranchie, and taken advantage of their solitude in the thick dark forest to kill him, others also believe it was a mere accident.
Meanwhile, another group is also reading spiritual meanings into the whole issue. The assembly member for the area, Amos Adjei, has appealed to them, especially the bereaved family, to exercise restraint as the police conducts its own investigations into the matter.
Narrating the circumstances surrounding the incident to journalists, Mr Adjei said Tachie and Koranchie were friends who usually go hunting together in the night. He disclosed that the two, as usual, had gone on hunting on Tuesday July 26, but separated after entering the forest.
According to the assembly member, Tachie said he saw an object like an antelope in the bush and shot it, only to realise it was his colleague Koranchie whose hunting light had been turned off.
He then came to report the incident to the police and handed himself over for further investigation.
