President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last week explained why he had been tactful in going full throttle in the Western Togoland secession nonsense.
As he also pointed out, that didn’t mean the National Security was sleeping, or that the tin, ragtag soldiers were having a field day overpowering the lawful might of the Armed Forces and personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
Already, as the Minister of Information has revealed, major intelligence activity has been prosecuted to inform the security agencies the next line of strategies to develop and action to take in stamping out the subversive illegality being perpetrated by an illiterate band of political deviants.
Background
As we would recall, an earlier harmless activity by the security agencies in the region to protect the health and sovereignty of the nation was not only misunderstood, but deprecated and abused by the leading opposition National Democratic Congress with tons of propaganda. It did that to suggest that the government was preventing people in the region from registering in their usual numbers to vote for their beloved party.
Yet, it is common knowledge that the voter registration exercise coincided with the border closure, which was intended at protecting not only the residents in the Volta Region, but also Ghanaians, visitors and travelers from neighbouring countries from picking the COVID-19 infection.
Additionally, the NDC failed to appreciate that that exercise, which was a global dictate, was ongoing in other border points across the country, the sub-region and the entire continent. Yet, the NDC managed to take advantage of the exercise aimed at enhancing World Health Organisation (WHO) and Ministry of Health (MoH) safety protocols to incite residents of the Volta and Oti regions against the government, claiming the intention is to reduce the number of people that would be voting in the two regions on December 7.
It appears that the strategy being adopted by the NDC to fight Election 2020 is to find fault with every conversation and gripe over it in the hope that it will dampen the resolve of the ruling party to move forward in proving to the electorate why it should reject John Mahama and the NDC and retain Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Commendation
That is why the Daily Statesman commends the traditional rulers and communities which have so far condemned the activities of the crazy movement, urging government to clamp down heavy and hard on their activities, while others have also pledged commitment to involving local warriors in smoking out the barbarian militants.
And, it is at this point that we believe the security agencies, who are now enjoying the support of the community, must effectively strategize and move in with dispatch to dismantle all the remaining structures of the militants on the grounds, and make a firm statement to the nation that they truly are in control.
That, we also believe, will assure ordinary citizens in the thousand and one communities in the two regions that not only is the NDC vile and looking in the direction of their stomachs, but that it is the NPP, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has the nation and its people at heart, regardless of which community we all hail from.
Dealing with the fugitives
As for those who may have escaped through the borders, or have moved elsewhere, we believe it is the same members of the respective communities from which they hail who must do their patriotic duty of blowing the cover of the fugitives, in helping return peace to the two regions.
At bilateral level, too, we may involve the government of neighbouring Togo in flushing them out and handing them over to Ghana for further investigations and prosecution, in line with ECOWAS security protocols and international convention.
What Ghana needs today, and into the foreseeable future, is political stability that will drive transformational development.
