The West Akyem Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has inaugurated a task force to deal with reckless driving and undisciplined drivers in the municipality.
The task force was inaugurated last week Thursday. It is made of up representatives from the Municipal Assembly, corporate driving unions, including Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Progressive Transport Owners’ Association (PROTOA), and the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD).
The task force’s mandate includes enforcing by-laws on wrongful parking and wrongful loading of passengers along main roads, including a spot fine of Ghc100 when caught.
The places to check wrongful parking include main roads, fuelling stations and dangerous junctions at certain odd hours. The task force is also mandated to arrest all drivers who will flout the traffic regulations and issue a spot fine if necessary.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Seth Oduro, said they would provide all the necessary logistics and support to ensure that the work of the task force brings progress. He said the aim is to ensure discipline among drivers and enhance law and order.
