Politicians without vision for their communities and countries are usually known for advancing their selfish interest at the detriment of the masses.
Unfortunately, however, a faceless group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the Awutu Senya West Constituency who support one of the parliamentary candidate hopefuls have ignorantly paraded themselves as such kind of self-centered politicians.
Following the opening of nominations for the party’s parliamentary primaries, two members of the party have since picked forms. They are the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin, and one Mr Amos Okai, a native of Awutu Bawjiase.
Sad to report that these supporters of Mr Oaki have resorted to engaging in a campaign that can only sink the party and further ruin the interest of the teaming members of the party. Having realized that their preferred candidate has no convincing message for the NPP delegates who will be deciding the next parliamentary candidate, they have resorted to engaging in a campaign that can only frustrate the party’s success in the 2024 elections.
Incitement
To this end, they have started inciting a section of the party members against his main contender, Mr Arhin, whose service to the party and the constituency has already caused fear and panic in the camp of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a poorly written article, these faceless cowards who did not identify themselves, tried to knock the heads of the supporters of a group of eight party members, against Mr Arhin.
Exposing themselves as a group of embittered folks who would not want the party to succeed unless they are in charge, they alleged that some eight people who did not get the nod of President Akufo-Addo to become District Chief Executive (DCE) have vowed to work against Mr Arhin should he become the party’s candidate.
According to them, these eight aggrieved members of the party took this decision because Mr Arhin supported the bid of the current DCE against them when they all applied for the position in 2021.
In a very divisive tone, they stated, “They’re patiently waiting for this man if indeed he says he wants to lead them as a Member of Parliament. Time will tell! To recapture the seat from NDC unless Amos Okai”.
Reason
It is obvious that they are lying, a reason why they could neither add their names to the article nor mention the name of their subject.
Though they did not mention Mr Arhin’s name, it is obvious that they are referring to him because he is currently the only contender of Mr Okai in the parliamentary primaries race.
Additionally, he is the only native of the constituency who works directly with the President and is purported to have a say on such issues.
It is clear from the tone of their article that they have decided to use the delegates to appease Mr Okai for the grievances he holds against Mr Arhin, whom they are blaming for the latter’s failure to become a DCE. Jesus Christ, this is deplorable! Should they be supported to do this at the expense of the welfare of the majority foot soldiers and the party? This must not be allowed!
What is worrying, however, is that Mr Okai, whose supporters are championing this ignoble course for, is never a match to the NDC parliamentary candidate. With him as the party’s candidate, the constituents who have seen the good works of Mr Arhin would conclude that the NPP is not interested in the seat.
No chance for Okai
Moreover, they know very well that Mr Okai cannot win the primaries. Nevertheless, they want the party to lose the seat when Mr Arhin finally becomes the candidate. That is why they have devised a strategy to incite the followers of the party members, whose DCE ambition did not materialise against Mr Arhin.
Indeed, the party cannot sacrifice the interest of the majority masses to appease an angry man who puts his anger over the general good of the party.
What is actually annoying is their decision to promote Mr Okai’s personal grievances against the interest of the masses in the party. Do they think Mr Okai’s personal interest overrides the welfare of the teaming party delegates, whom Mr Arhin has been assisting in so many ways, including getting them permanent public sector jobs?
It is gross disrespect to the teaming masses of the party for Mr Okai’s supporters to think they can incite them to work against their own interest. It is indeed sad to put his personal grievances above the welfare of thousands.
Pretence
If Mr Okai and his supporters are pretending not to see what Mr Arhin has been doing for the party people, whose interest they feel do not matter, it is time he is told.
Through Mr Arhin’s effort, 24 qualified party members have secured jobs with the Ghana Immigration Service within a year. Others have gotten jobs with the Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces while over 100 qualified party loyalists have also been employed in different public sector institutions.
Should all this be truncated because somebody is embittered? Definitely, no! It is against this backdrop that I deem it fit to appeal to the teaming supporters of the party to ignore these visionless folks and rise up to protect their own interest by supporting Mr Arhin to do more for them.
On a more serious note, Mr Okai should also do the needful by issuing a counter statement to disassociate himself from this selfish-inspired, anti-party behaviour if he wants to continue enjoying the respect known party members accord him.
This is also a wake-up call to the leadership of the party in the Awutu Senya West Constituency to step up their game with regard to promoting social cohesion among the members.
