The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has opened a new district office in Akatsi, in the Volta Region’s Akatsi South Municipality.
Mr Samuel Lodonu, the DVLA’s Volta Regional Manager, indicated that he had no doubt that the fully operational office would improve access to licensing in the Volta Region.
He explained that this would go a long way toward ensuring road safety.
“We only have to take a look at the statistics of accidents on our roads to realize the importance of the commissioning of yet another DVLA office. [By] this time last year alone, there were over 11,858 road traffic accidents in Ghana and the majority of them [were] as a result of drunk-driving and over-speeding,” he said.
He stated that the costs and diverse repercussions include trauma, loss of life, and economic disadvantage to households and families.
Ensuring best practices
In a speech read for him, the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, said that the DVLA’s objective is to ensure best practices in driver licensing and vehicle registration to promote road safety and a sustainable environment while promoting integrity, excellence, professionalism, and reliability in service delivery.
“There have been a series of stakeholder engagements on the Road Traffic Act 204 and the road traffic regulation 22 to plan on our roads. This new office is one in a series of efforts to bring service centers closer to the people,” he said.
Taking his turn, the Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Kwasi Agyeman Busia, said that the Authority is proud of the Akatsi district office because it is the country’s 33rd.
The opening of the office, according to Mr. Busia, is in accordance with the DVLA’s strategic objective to continue working with district and municipal assemblies, as well as individuals, to develop innovative ways to bring their services closer to their customers.
“We will continue to build more offices, as we have started with the goal of achieving the establishment of an autonomous, efficient and sustainable DVLA,” he said.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Board Chairman of DVLA, Mr. Frank Davies, noted that the Authority has become popular as one of the best-performing public institutions
