The NPP Member of Parliament for the Mion constituency in the Northern Region, Musah Abdul-Aziz Ayaba, says his instrumentality has led to the connection of 36 communities in the area to the national grid, under the government’s Rural Electrification Project (REP).
The beneficiary communities include Nsoja, Tafaldo, Manyini, Wagambo 1, Wagambo 2, Tagnamo, Kayang, Tanado, and Gundoglanyili. The remaining are Donbini, Jablajo 1, Jablajo 2, Tinsung, Nanduli, Nanvili, Bugyili, Gburatinga, Yabogu, Kufori, Warivi, Buarido 1, Mayefuni 1, Mayefuni 2, Kunkpano, and Makomdo (Buarido 2) etc.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Statesman, Mr. Abdul-Aziz Ayaba, who is also a Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, said the project formed part of his efforts and commitment towards ensuring that the entire constituency was hooked onto the national grid.
“It is part of my ongoing efforts to drive development, and improve the quality of life for my constituents. I am determined to achieve universal electricity coverage in the constituency to enhance the economic and social lives of the people,” he stressed .
The Mion lawmaker disclosed that prior to his tenure as MP, only 25 out of 176 communities were connected to the national grid, leaving a significant portion of the constituency in the dark.
He noted that the lack of electricity was a major impediment to the growth and development of the area, especially in a world increasingly driven by globalisation and digital advancements.
“I have connected 36 communities to the national grid, with an additional four communities soon to be added, bringing the total to 40 since I assumed office in 2020,” he pointed out. He emphasised that expanding electricity access had been one of his top priorities since he became MP.
Addressing unemployment
Mr. Abdul-Aziz Ayaba, who is the first NPP candidate to win the Mion constituency seat since 1992, highlighted the strides made in addressing youth unemployment, a long-standing issue in the area.
According to him, many young men and women who were previously unemployed are now gainfully employed, thanks to the various initiatives he introduced.
“Unemployment, which was a significant challenge in the constituency, is no longer a problem. I have empowered the youth, and created an enabling environment for several of them to gain employment. Today, youth in my constituency have become nurses, doctors, military officers, architects, police officers, and immigration officers, among others,” he mentioned.
He further indicated that he had equally improved the water situation in the area by providing over 30 communities with boreholes, noting that “the Sang water project is currently ongoing to provide more water to his constituents in the coming days and beyond.”
Appointments/support
The MP revealed that many of his constituents had received appointments to various positions, a development that had never occurred before 1992.
He indicated that the youth in the constituency had been empowered and supported with sewing machines, hair dryers, startup capital, and training programmes to improve their livelihoods.
“My achievements mark a transformation in the Mion constituency. They equally reflect my commitment to improving the lives of my constituents, and advancing the area’s development agenda. These efforts are set to further enhance the living standards in the constituency and enhance growth and prosperity in the region,” he said.
He called on his constituents to retain him in the upcoming election for more development and transformation.
