Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has giventhe assurance that he remains committed to offering leadership grounded in integrity and service.
He gave the assurance yesterday while delivering a keynote address titled “The Covenant of Renewal – KAA’s 6 Point Plan, A Blueprint for Creating the Competent State” in Accra.
He reflected on Ghana’s journey since independence, noting, “On the 6th of March 1957, exactly five years before I was born, Ghana became an independent country and at the Old Polo Grounds, Dr Kwame Nkrumah… posited that it was Ghana’s duty to show how Independent Africa could manage its own affairs.”
He lamented the state of the nation, citing unemployment, poverty and systemic inefficiencies: “Too many of our citizens are unable to achieve their full potential in life due to suboptimal systems of education, health, governance, infrastructure management and more… This is not the Ghana our martyrs died for.”
New Dawn
He emphasised the need for a “New Dawn”, and outlined a comprehensive sixpoint “covenant for national renewal”. On land reform, youth empowerment and modernised agriculture, he pledged that his administration would launch a comprehensive Land Reform and Transparent Compensation Framework. He explained that every acre of land would be utilised, and young people would be given the tools to heal the environment, transforming farming into a noble and wealth-creating profession. “We will feed ourselves and feed our future,” he stated, underscoring the critical role of agriculture in national development.
On urban regeneration, rural renewal and environmental protection, he stressed the importance of enforcing urban planning and environmental laws. He assured Ghanaians that through this plan, the nation’s order and beauty would be restored. “From the chaos of our cities to the neglect of our villages, the era of lawlessness will be over,” he said, emphasising the need to create liveable, structured communities.
Touching on fiscal discipline and value for money, Ing. Agyepong promised to eliminate waste in public expenditure. He stated, “We will rationalise government expenditure and make a sacred vow: Complete all existing projects before starting new ones. No more abandoned hospitals, no more uncompleted roads… restore fiscal sanity and rebuild public trust.” He highlighted the necessity of ensuring that public resources are used effectively for the benefit of the people.
Meritocracy
On restoring meritocracy and professionalism in the public service, he vowed to rebuild the dignity and competence of state institutions. He emphasised that promotions would be based on merit rather than political connections, pledging to end the cycle of patronage. “We will build strong and permanent state institutions of excellence that serve only the people,” he said. He also proposed a downsized government and judicial reforms to enhance efficiency and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
Regarding the informal sector, Ing. Agyepong pledged to introduce a Simplified National Trade Licence Regime to bring businesses into the formal economy. He assured artisans, market traders and small business operators that they would not be punished with taxes, but would instead be empowered with legal protection, licences and access to credit. “Your enterprise will be our nation’s engine,” he said, recognising the informal sector as the backbone of Ghana’s economy.
Creative arts, sports
On empowering the creative arts, and reigniting sports, he promised strong protection of intellectual property to ensure that artists retain ownership of their work and earn their just rewards. He highlighted the importance of returning to the basics in sports by reviving school competitions, colts football, athletics and boxing, aiming to restore the connection between communities and their teams. “Our athletes will rise again from colts football and school sports to global glory,” he said, stressing the role of sports and arts in fostering national pride.
Ing Agyepong declared, “I offer you leadership with integrity that will unite our party, reconnect with our base, and earn the trust of Ghana… Choose values over vanity; choose principles over patronage; choose character over chicanery; choose to believe again.”
He further called on NPP delegates to vote wisely in the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, urging them to choose the path of competence, hope and dignity for the nation.
