The Ghana Flying Disc Federation (GFDF) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Frisbee Connects to promote and develop Ultimate Frisbee in Ghana.
The agreement establishes a strategic international partnership focused on strengthening grassroots participation, enhancing coaching capacity, promoting integrity in sport, and expanding structured Ultimate Frisbee programs nationwide.
Promoting an Integrity-Based Sport
Ultimate Frisbee is globally recognized as an integrity sport, built on the principle of Spirit of the Game — a unique system of self-officiation that emphasizes honesty, respect, fairness, and personal responsibility.
Unlike many competitive sports, players are entrusted with making their own calls on the field, fostering leadership, conflict resolution skills, and ethical decision-making.
Through this partnership, both organizations reaffirm their commitment to:
• Promoting ethical sporting values
• Encouraging fair play and mutual respect
• Developing responsible young leaders through sport
Advancing Girls’ Participation and Inclusion
A key focus of the collaboration is the promotion of girls’ and women’s participation in Ultimate Frisbee. The sport naturally encourages mixed-gender participation and provides equal opportunities for leadership and competition.
The partnership will support:
• Targeted school-based programs for girls
• Mixed-gender competitions and training clinics
• Leadership pathways for female coaches and captains
• Safe and inclusive sporting environments
By intentionally expanding access for girls and young women, GFDF and Frisbee Connects aim to contribute meaningfully to gender equity in Ghanaian sport.
Strengthening International Collaboration
Under the MOU, both organizations will also collaborate to:
• Introduce and expand Ultimate Frisbee in schools and universities
• Organize coaching education and technical development workshops
• Facilitate volunteer exchanges between Ghana and the Netherlands
• Strengthen institutional development within Ghana’s flying disc ecosystem
Leadership Perspectives
President of the Ghana Flying Disc Federation, Mr. D described the agreement as a transformative step for the sport in Ghana.
“This collaboration strengthens our international partnerships and reinforces our commitment to structured, ethical, and inclusive development of Ultimate Frisbee in Ghana. Our sport builds character, promotes integrity, and creates equal opportunities for boys and girls alike.”
Founder and Executive Director of Frisbee Connects, Anna Hoefnagels, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:
“We believe in the power of Ultimate Frisbee to connect communities and empower young people. Its foundation in trust and integrity makes it a powerful tool for social development. Partnering with GFDF allows us to support locally driven growth and expand opportunities for both girls and boys in Ghana.”
A Growing Movement
Ultimate Frisbee continues to grow globally as a sport built on the principle of “Spirit of the Game,” promoting fairness, respect, and self-officiation. With this partnership in place, Ghana is poised to strengthen its position within the international flying disc community.
The Ghana Flying Disc Federation remains committed to building structured pathways for athletes, coaches, and communities through strategic partnerships and innovative programs.
