The Ghana Police Service says its ongoing investigation into the social media activities of TikTok personality Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof,” has uncovered a wider financial network allegedly supporting the activities.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, said police had identified several individuals, including high-profile persons, who allegedly provided financial support connected to the activities under investigation.
COP Ms Donkor disclosed this on Friday, September 18, 2026, during a press briefing at the CID Headquarters in Accra.
She said information obtained through forensic examination of mobile devices and mobile money transaction records had enabled investigators to trace significant financial transfers made to Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a nurse residing at Techiman who has been arrested in connection with the case.
According to COP Ms Donkor, some of the funds received by Bafoh were subsequently shared with Kodua, while other portions were allegedly distributed to individuals involved in circulating videos produced by Kodua across various social media platforms.
“It will interest you to know that the police also know all those, including high-profile persons within society, who are funding them through information retrieved from their phones,” COP Ms Donkor said.
She said forensic analysis of voices and other information retrieved from the devices had provided investigators with additional material concerning the alleged activities.
COP Ms Donkor said transcripts of the relevant material would be tendered as evidence in court.
The CID Director-General further disclosed that investigators had established financial arrangements between Kodua, who is believed to be domiciled in the United Kingdom, and Bafoh in Ghana.
She said Kodua allegedly remitted money to Bafoh to support the activities, after which Bafoh allegedly distributed portions of the funds to other individuals involved in the redistribution and recirculation of Kodua’s videos.
The police investigation, COP Ms Donkor said, is therefore extending beyond the two suspects as investigators work to identify individuals who allegedly participated in the distribution network and those suspected of financing the activities.
Bafoh was arrested on September 17, 2026, through what COP Ms Donkor described as a collaborative operation involving the Ghana Police Service and the National Signals Bureau.
She was subsequently put before the court on a charge of abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news.
COP Ms Donkor said the court remanded Bafoh into police custody to assist with investigations and ordered that she reappear on September 30, 2026.
The investigation follows police concerns over content published through the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account, which COP Ms Donkor said had been used to issue offensive and inciteful comments and publish false news likely to cause fear and alarm.
She cited as one of the matters under investigation a video in which Kodua allegedly claimed that there had been a near coup d’état at Jubilee House.
COP Ms Donkor said police intelligence had identified Kodua as the owner of the account and that she was believed to be domiciled in the United Kingdom.
She said investigations would continue to identify and locate other persons allegedly involved in the activities, including those suspected of providing financial support.
COP Ms Donkor urged the public to exercise caution in their online communications, stressing that acts, conduct and publications contrary to the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772), and the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), could amount to criminal offences.
She said the Ghana Police Service would continue to work with relevant stakeholders and the public to maintain security, law and order both within communities and in online spaces.
COP Ms Donkor said the briefing was also intended to uphold the Police Service’s commitment to transparency and accountability by providing updates on cases under investigation.
