Five armed robbers on Monday gunned down a bystander at the Goodness Energy fuel station in Akyem Osiem in the Eastern Region.
The deceased, Nuhu Yashawu, 32, was attempting to flee the scene during the scuffle but unfortunately took a stray bullet from behind due to indiscriminate firing by the armed robbers, leading to his untimely death.
Another victim, Padmore Ofosu, 71, was hit at the back by a bullet and is currently on admission at the hospital for treatment.
The robbers made away with an undisclosed amount of money, which was the night’s sales of the station, and a Motorola phone belonging to the night security man, Adamu Zakari.
Indiscriminate shooting
Confirming the incident to the media, ASP Fred Kpetigo, Crime Officer for the Abuakwa North Police Command, said at about 7:45 pm on Monday, the armed robbers came to the filling station with guns, knives, and other gadgets firing warning shots all over.
According to the police officer, when they got to the fuel station, they approached the attendant of the station and asked him to bring all the sales made. Customers at the station were also asked to lie down prostrate.
“The fuel attendant refused to release any money to them, but after several threats of harm he released the day’s sales to the armed men. But they kept shooting into the crowd to disperse them so everyone was running for their lives. Unfortunately, there were three guys beside the filling station and the robbers shot one of the guys,” the police narrated.
The Police retrieved five empty cartridges at the scene.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Hawa Memorial hospital mortuary in Osiem for preservation.
Local police say they have started their investigations into the robbery incident to arrest the perpetrators.
