The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has handed over 200 dual desks to the Municipal Education Directorate for onward distribution to public schools in the municipality.
Alhaji Umar Bodinga, Abuakwa North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who handed over the desks to Ms Abena Gyamera, the Municipal Director of Education, said this is to improve teaching and learning in the area.
According to the MCE, the desks were provided by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) after a request was made by the assembly.
Addressing heads of schools at a short handing over ceremony at the forecourt of the assembly, Mr Bodinga reiterated the assembly’s commitment to providing quality education in the municipality, giving the assurance that it would not shirk its responsibilities.

He indicated that the assembly was getting more desks to address the furniture gap in schools, disclosing that a total of 1,000 desks have already been distributed to schools, including furniture for teachers.
“When I took over as the MCE. I went on a familiarization visit to assess the challenges of the municipality. Education was my first stop and I noticed that they lacked furniture. So I made it a point to address that issue and my first contact point was with GETFUND to assist me. And they heard my plea and here we are, gradually addressing the desk challenges in the municipality,” the MCE said.
Mr Bodinga stated that the assembly would initiate a scheme to award hardworking students from the municipality to motivate them and also provide competition among their peers.
Receiving the items, Municipal Education Director, Ms Gyamera thanked the MCE for delivering the desks, saying the gesture would go a long way in ensuring that students have the best time and sitting posture to enjoy classes.
