The Assemblyman of Ahenbronum electoral area, Akoasi in the Abriem constituency in the Eastern Region, George Krobea Asante, has called on the leadership of the driver unions in the area to accept the approved fares issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
He made the call during a meeting with the driver unions, the Unit Committee and the Chief Inspector in charge of the Akoasi Police Station on Monday.
Mr Krobea Asante said considering the distance from Nkawkaw to Akoasi (19.5 km) and that of Akoasi to Abirem, and juxtaposing with the new fares chart issued by the GPRTU and the GRTCC, it was resolved that all taxes from Nkawkaw to Akoasi and from Akoasi to Abirem must charge Nine Ghana Cedis (GHC9.00).
He noted that per the calculations, it was supposed to be eight cedis fifty pesewas (GHC8.50), but due to the difficulty in getting the fifty pesewas (0.50P) change, it was agreed to be adjusted or pegged at the GHC9.00.
He indicated that the proactive measure was taken to prevent any unpleasant occurrences between cherished drivers and the traveling public.
Consequently, he directed all operators, commuters, and the general public to cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares. That, he emphasised, will also help prevent any misunderstandings in transport activities.
The Assemblyman also thanked the leadership of the various driver unions in Akoasi, the Chief Inspector of the Akoasi Police Station and the Unit Committee of Akoasi for their support.
