A member of the New Patriotic Party, Maame Ama Asantewaa Obeng, has launched a group known as EMERALDS, made up of young ladies with commitment to mobilizing votes for the governing party ahead of the 2024 general elections
The group’s aim is to collaborate with the National Organiser of the party to complement the work of the women’s wing, youth wing and other volunteer groups to reach out to the electorate.
It will also help create awareness on the NPP government as the ideal party to manage the country better in improving living conditions.
The overarching objective of EMERALDS is to rekindle and revitalise the NPP’s base, and rebuild trust in the NPP government, especially in these times of growing cynicism.
The group is made up of solid operational team of four strong persons, namely Garry Dwomoh, Florence Ama Ahiable, Akosua Antwiwaa and Fidelia Quansah Fianko.
Speaking during the official launch in Accra over the weekend, the founder and president of Emeralds, Maame Ama Asantewaa Obeng, said she and the other four persons cannot do the work alone. She said the group would strong leaders to be in charge of every region across the country.
“EMERALDS is not a rivalry group. We are not here to compete with any group, neither are we here to usurp the functions of the women’s wing of the NPP. Millions of young people have volunteered to campaign and canvass for support for the NPP, but there are still many more who would do so if given the opportunity. Personal outreach to youth is critical,” she said.
Young people
According to the president of the group, when young people are contacted personally and asked to support a campaign, it creates a sense of inclusiveness and participation.
This efforts, she believes, will help win hundreds of thousands young people for the NPP.
“It is for that reason that EMERALDS is born. We are here to expand the frontiers of volunteerism in the NPP, and offer the opportunity to as many young people as willing to participate in the political process and volunteer to enhance the electoral fortunes of the biggest political party in Ghana,” she noted.
Maame Asantewaa Obeng said the group will offer numerous opportunities for young people to be involved as volunteers for the NPP.
She said that arrangement has the potential to increase NPP’s campaign outreach, allowing it to reach more voters, especially young voters who may be receptive to listening to their peers.
Additionally, she stated, the group will help sharpen young people’s political skills, knowledge and motivation by providing opportunities for them.
“EMERALDS will focus on skills training workshops to provide personlised, hands-on training to young people to either improve on their existing businesses or enhance their employability. Through open forums across the country, EMERALDS will engage young people from all backgrounds to communicate government’s policies and programmes to them,” she added.
She further indicated that the group will also sensitise the electorate against the growing demagoguery in Ghana’s political space, which can be detrimental to the country’s sustainable development.
“It is in the best interest of the good people of Ghana to know that the available records since 1992 prove that the NPP manages our country better than our main opponents. This is something we are very much proud of and are ready to uphold and defend,” she emphasised.
