The Acting Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has taken a major legal step towards intensifying the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey”.
A statement issued by the Director of Communications for the Lands Ministry, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, disclosed that the Minister had formally written to the Office of the Attorney General, requesting the immediate revocation of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and its amended version, L.I. 2501.
This, it explained, was aimed at unifying and strengthening Ghana’s regulatory framework for mining activities.
“This decisive legal action is designed to unify and strengthen the regulatory framework, creating a cohesive front for all stakeholders in the national fight against illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey,’” it said.
According to the statement, Mr Buah, in his letter, emphasised confidence in the current regulatory regime managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), stating that it already offered a comprehensive set of guidelines sufficient to regulate the mining sector.
The proposed revocation of the L.I.s is intended to consolidate authority under the EPA, ensuring stricter enforcement of environmental and social standards and promoting more responsible mining practices nationwide.
