Dr. Paul Herzuah, Political/media communications expert & UniMAC lecturer
Dr. Paul Herzuah, a political and media communications expert and lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), has described the nomination of Haruna Iddrisu as Minister for Education-designate as a strategic and informed decision by President John Dramani Mahama.
The appointment of Mr. Iddrisu, a former Minority Leader in Parliament, has sparked debates among the public, with some questioning whether he is the right fit for the Ministry of Education.
Speaking to Kasapa FM, Dr. Herzuah emphasised that heads of state often possess access to insights and information not available to the general public.
“Sometimes heads of state and presidents know information that the common citizen doesn’t know, so I think the president knows what he is doing with this appointment,” he stated.
Leadership roles
Dr. Herzuah explained that assigning leadership roles is primarily based on intelligence and cognitive ability rather than an individual’s past political positions. He noted that Haruna Iddrisu’s track record as a critical thinker and a smart politician qualifies him to manage the challenges in the education sector.
“When someone is intelligent, it doesn’t matter their background—wherever they are assigned, they can perform. We know Haruna Iddrisu as a critical thinker and a smart individual,” he said.
Touching on the challenges facing the country’s education system, Dr. Herzuah stressed the need for a highly capable leader at the helm.
“There is pressure in our education sector, and it is very demanding. If you appoint just anyone, they may struggle to handle it. I believe this is a strategic move by the president, and Haruna Iddrisu has what it takes to deliver,” he added.
