Feminine Strength Foundation (FSF), an NGO advocating the development and empowerment of girls and women in Ghana, has called for increased participation of girls in disc sports.
Speaking to a group of young girls at the MSCF sports training site in La, the Executive Director of FSF, Mrs. Patience Naa Odarley Lamptey, highlighted the potential of disc sports to attract more girls to participate in sports. She emphasised that Ultimate Frisbee, one of the key disc sports, was unique in its inclusion of mixed-gender teams, a feature that can inspire and motivate girls to join.
Spirit of the game
Mrs. Lamptey also noted that the “Spirit of the Game,” a guiding principle of disc sports, promotes values such as sportsmanship, honesty, fairness, and mutual support. She stressed that these values could contribute to the moral and social development of young girls, fostering an environment of integrity and teamwork.
Additionally, she mentioned that FSF was in talks with the Ghana Flying Disc Federation (GFDF) to introduce disc sports to some all-girls schools across the country. She also highlighted the physical and psychological benefits of disc sports, encouraging young girls to embrace the game as a viable recreational and developmental activity.
Mr. Peter Asiedu, Vice President of the Ghana Flying Disc Federation, who was also present at the event, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with FSF to enhance the sporting experience for girls through disc sports.
Mrs. Lamptey called on stakeholders to support initiatives that promote girls’ participation in sports, stressing the critical role of sports in shaping future generations of empowered women.
