The Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA) hosted a training workshop for coaches within the Ashaiman municipality over the weekend. It was aimed to introduce new coaches to disc sports and educate them about the benefits and opportunities associated with the game.
The event was facilitated by Fumiko Sakon, a GFDA volunteer coach from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). As part of the workshop, she instructed participants on the basics of Ultimate Frisbee and Guts games.
She also emphasised the importance of involving girls in disc sports and advised coaches to ensure that more girls get the opportunity to play.
Taking his turn, Mr. Desmond Kwame Mantey, president of the GFDA, stressed the need for consistent training to help athletes become familiar with the disc as quickly as possible.
He revealed that the GFDA plans to participate in several WFDF-sanctioned events next year, making it essential to start training athletes now.
Girls’ inclusivity
He reiterated the importance of including girls at all levels of the game to support gender equality. This, he indicated, will ensure that they also benefit from the arrival of disc sports in Ghana. He urged the coaches to be dedicated and work hard to nurture athletes capable of winning laurels for Ghana in the near future.
Meanwhile, Madam Fumiko Sakon of JICA donated 100 discs to the GFDA to help promote disc sports in Ghana. The president of GFDA expressed its gratitude to her and pledged to use the discs judiciously.
He reaffirmed GFDA’s commitment to promoting disc sports in other regions of Ghana. He called on all stakeholders to support efforts to advance disc sports for youth and national development.
