The Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA) has observed the 2023 International Day of Sports for Development and Peace (IDSDP) with the youth from the Osu Flying Disc Club in Accra.

As part of the programme for the day, the youth participated in Ultimate Frisbee games, and had peer discussion. They were also exposed on the right things to do in ensuring peaceful co-existence among their peers both at home and school.

IDSDP is celebrated every on the 6th April of every year. It is aimed at raising awareness on the potential of sports to foster peace and promote development within communities and the country at large.

Peace is an essential requisite for development and sports, without doubt, has the potential to promote peace and subsequently, development in diverse ways.

Objective/Impact

The GFDA’s objective for the day was to enhance awareness of Ultimate Frisbee and other disc sports athletes on the power of sports to promote peace and development.

It was also to further encourage disc sports athletes to live by the principle of the ‘spirit of the game’, which strongly advocates for peaceful co-existence and respect for one another.

The event created the opportunity for the youth to enhance their understanding of sports for peace and development. It also created the platform for the youth to paly Ultimate Frisbee for fun and further enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

The event also created the opportunity for community girls to get engaged in sports for good health and wellbeing.

Expectation/ Encouragement

GFDA expects that the event will trigger a sense of responsibility among the youth participants to be more friendly with each other. This will go a long way to foster peaceful co-existence at school and within their various communities.

In his remarks to participants, GFDA president, Mr. Desmond Kwame Mantey, encouraged the youth to take up disc sports seriously. He said that because, he believes it has a strong potential to enhance their physical and mental health as well as moral behavior.

He emphasised that one of the key elements of Ultimate Frisbee is discipline, urging the youth to embrace discipline at all times and in all things.

Mr Kwame Mantey disclosed that, as a partner to the United Nations World Urban Campaign, GFDA will roll out programmes in the coming months aimed at youth development and gender equality.
