The Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA) has received 100 Ultimate Frisbee discs from the Japan Flying Disc Association (JFDA) in support of the association’s agenda to promote the flying disc sports in Ghana.
The donation was facilitated by Madam Fumiko Sakon, of JICA, Ghana.
The president of the GFDA, Desmond Kwame Mantey, expressed appreciation for the gift, hoping that the discs would go a long way in promoting the agenda of the GFDA in the various regions in the country.
Mr Mantey said the participation of girls is key for the development of the association, and hoped that serious efforts would be made to introduce the game to more girls’ institutions.
Efforts & tournament
According to him, the association will ensure more female engagement in the game as efforts are made to introduce the game to more numbers of girls in schools within Accra as well as other regions.
“As a strong advocate of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the GFDA will further intensify its effort towards the realisation of the UN SDGs by streamlining its programmes and activities to address gender equality, youth development and environmental preservation in the coming months and years,” he said.
In a related development, the GFDA held its maiden youth Ultimate Frisbee tournament at the Valco Park, Tema Community 7, on December 24, 2021.
The event created the opportunity for the youth to exhibit their talents in the Ultimate Frisbee game as well as mingle with their friends from other parts of Accra.
The tournament was won by the lads from the La 1st Win Ultimate Club, and the Spirit Award went to Mary Annan, of the Osu Ultimate Club. The children also showed great signs of improvement as compared to their earlier performance.
Encouraged by the performance, the GFDA says it will ensure that they get the needed support in the form of equipment, apparel and right coaching support in their quest to master the game of Ultimate Frisbee.
The Event Organiser and Secretary of the Greater Accra Regional Flying Disc Association, Sgt Abednego Bortiah, of the Ghana Police Service, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the event.
She disclosed plans by the regional branch to introduce the game to the security services in the Greater Accra Region.
GFDA hopes to start its maiden Ultimate Frisbee league and the university programme in the first quarter of this year. The association is also looking forward to participating in the ‘2022 All African Ultimate Frisbee Championship’. GFDA is therefore calling on all stakeholders to come on board and support in the realisation of the association’s objective.
