The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has inaugurated an 11-member governing board for the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET).
In her remarks, she said that the Agency’s function is vital owing to rapid changes in climate and weather conditions as a result of rising temperatures around the world.
The Minister therefore urged the board to come up with a variety of new funding mechanisms that will help the Agency become more stable, reliable, and self-sustaining.
Innovation
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful emphasised the importance of upgrading infrastructure and logistics, as well as boosting the Agency’s human resource capacity and internal income generation capabilities, as part of the transformation process under the (GMet) five-year strategic plan, which ends in 2023.
She cited a lack of scientific, technological, and human skills to monitor, forecast and disclose early warning signs of severe weather and climate events in order to mitigate impending hazards due to climate change as some of the issues GMet faces.
The Minister expressed her trust in the Board’s ability to devise innovative strategies for transforming the Agency into a more successful and efficient organisation.
On behalf of the other board members, the Chairman of the Board, George Isaac Amoo, thanked the Minister, and pledged to work hard to reposition GMet to match worldwide standards.
He emphasised the board’s potential to reposition itself such that the impact of weather forecasts would be felt everywhere, requiring all Ghanaians to make educated decisions about their daily movements.
