The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on lawlessness in the wake of the recent ‘Democracy Hub’ protests that disrupted public order in the capital. Her caution comes as international media outlets continue to cover the protests, which have seen clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Addressing the growing concerns, the Minister warned that while the right to peaceful protest was enshrined in Ghana’s democracy, the government would not condone acts of violence, vandalism or attacks on the police.
“Ghana has always supported citizens’ right to demonstrate peacefully. However, acts of vandalism, attacks on police, and disruptions to public order will always be contained by the Police in any jurisdiction,” she stated in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The Information Minister further stressed that Ghana’s legal system was equipped to handle such incidents, ensuring justice was served fairly. “Ghana’s courts are mature enough to examine evidence against accused persons and make appropriate decisions,” she indicated, highlighting the government’s confidence in the judiciary’s ability to process the matter impartially.
Madam Abubakar also urged the media, both locally and internationally, to report the situation accurately without bias. She emphasised that balanced coverage was crucial in preserving the nation’s image on the global stage.
The protest
The protests, spearheaded by the ‘Democracy Hub’, took a dramatic turn when demonstrators defied a court injunction and disregarded police directives. The unrest reached a tipping point at the 37 Roundabout in Accra, where clashes erupted between protesters and security forces.
Demonstrators, who were voicing concerns over illegal mining and the government’s alleged involvement, resorted to blocking roads and damaging public and private property, prompting swift police intervention.
So far, over 40 protesters have been arrested on charges ranging from unlawful assembly and property damage to obstruction of public order. Authorities have assured the public that those responsible will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
While some members of the public have expressed concern over the police’s handling of the demonstrations, many have commended the security forces for their professionalism, noting that they managed to maintain relative peace despite the protesters’ defiance. Authorities have assured residents that efforts are underway to restore calm and prevent further disruptions in the capital.
