Female head porters, popularly known as Kayayei, who are beneficiaries of the ‘Kayayei Empowerment Programme’, have pledged their support for Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December elections.
During the 3rd Cohort graduation ceremony in Accra yesterday, the Kayayeis cited Dr Bawumia’s commitment to their welfare and the tangible benefits they had already begun to experience under his leadership. They lauded the programme, describing it as a beacon of hope in their quest to break the cycle of poverty.
Addressing the head porters, the Chief Executive Officer of National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Mr Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, stated that the programme had provided training in baking, soap-making, pedicure and manicure, bead-making, décor and makeup.
He revealed that the graduates had already started entrepreneurial ventures, creating indirect jobs and reducing unemployment.
He pointed out that about 1800 indirect jobs had been created, reducing the risk of homelessness and social vices.
He further reaffirmed NEIP’s commitment to supporting initiatives that create pathways to dignity and self-sufficiency. “Together, we can build a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances,” he added.
Graduation
The NEIP yesterday graduated 1800 young head porters who had undertaken the ‘skills empowerment programme’.
The programme aims to equip these marginalised women with vocational skills, promoting self-sufficiency and dignity.
The NEIP training, which commenced on Tuesday, May 28, will cater to 5,000 beneficiaries, with 600 participants per cohort each month, running until December 2024.
The training modules include beading and jewellery, soaps and detergents, makeup artistry, bakery, decor, pedicure and manicure, among others.
