Sixteen passengers last Friday lost their lives in a gory road accident involving two VIP branded KIA Granbird buses at Akyem Asafo, on the Accra-to-Kumasi highway.
The number comprises 13 males and 3 females who died on the spot, including the two drivers of the VIP Granbird buses with registration numbers GT 5629-18 and GE 5510-15.
The accident, which occurred last Friday, February 26, at about 1:30am, left dozens of passengers in critical condition, with some on admission at the emergency wards of the Akyem Asafo Health Centre and the Suhum Government Hospital.
Cause
According to police reports, it was a wrongful overtaking which caused the unfortunate accident.
“The driver in charge of one of the VIP buses, with registration number GT 5629-18, fully loaded with passengers from Accra heading towards Kumasi, wrongfully overtook some vehicles ahead of him on reaching Akyem Asafo junction stretch of the road and crashing with the other VIP bus with registration number GE 5510-15 because the first driver didn’t notice the sudden appearance of the second driver with speed,” the police said in a statement.
The acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado, said the bodies of the dead were extricated and deposited at the morgue of the Suhum Government Hospital for preservation, identification and autopsy.
He indicated that the police would follow up and investigate what actually caused the unfortunate accident.
He added that it took personnel of the Police and Ghana National Fire Service from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi,and Ayensuano to assist in rescuing some of the victims.
