Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Assin Central MP
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a presidential hopeful of the NPP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has urged the rank and file of the party to prepare and organise well to win the trust of the Ghanaian people ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In an exclusive chat with the Daily Statesman, the legislator stressed that, at the end of the day, if the NPP puts its house in order, it will present the electorate with a relevant choice to make an informed decision for the good of Ghana.
According to him, however, the party leadership, in aspiring to win the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, must commit itself to rallying the rank and file of the party in stepping up the fight as the 2024 campaign rolls out.
Mr Agyapong also pledged his utmost support in contributing his last ounce of strength and sacrifice to win majority seats in Parliament as well as help the NPP form government with a Speaker of Parliament from within the NPP.
He also insisted that the NPP cannot afford to relinquish political power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the alternative to that or, for that matter, the NDC being in power would “be worse and scary to the prospects of the country”.
Advice
The Assin Central legislator has advised the NPP not to waste time on the political gimmicks of the NDC national executives, but focus on the 2024 general election.
He maintained that the crop of leaders elected by the NDC, particularly Chairman Asiedu Nketiah and General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey, signals that the opposition party is poised to turn the 2024 electioneering campaign on insults and propaganda.
Mr Agyapong recalled how these same persons fabricated documents and assigned money in false bank accounts for him and other NPP stalwarts ahead of the 2008 general election as a ploy to hoodwink Ghanaians into believing that members of the then ruling government were dissipating state resources for themselves.
He indicated that although those stories were untrue, many Ghanaians believed them, affecting the electoral fortunes of the NPP.
Consequently, he has cautioned the NPP to devise strategies to counter any such allegations if the NDC brings them up.
Commendation
Mr. Agyapong lauded the national officers of the NPP for the steps taken to bring the party and government together for a common purpose.
He emphasised that closeness of party and government is important in ensuring unity to ‘break the eight’ years governance cycle, adding that disunity can break their front.
According to him, it affords opportunity for government and other officials to liaise with each other in the implementation of policies and programmes.
He pledged his support to whoever would be elected flagbearer of the party, and called on others in the party to do same, saying unity would be key to the party’s victory in 2024.
As the NPP continues to consolidate its democracy and reap the dividend thereof, he said, it will not be out of place to commend the citizens, particularly party faithful and, indeed, all stakeholders, for the various roles they had all played since the inception of the Fourth Republic to entrench the country’s democracy.
