A member of the NPP National Communications Team, Lawrence Kwesi Botchway Jnr, says what the party needs today is a crop of leaders with “great minds” to occupy its national executive positions, and help catapult the party into another victory in the 2024 general elections.
He said a major reason why the NPP should not play with the 2024 elections that the NDC “is committed through fair or foul means to recapture power”.
He stressed that on account of that, it is imperative that elected office holders go the extra mile in achieving the ‘breaking the 8’ agenda.
Speaking in an interview with the media, he said even though variety and options are key in taking vital decisions, it is trite knowledge that “we don’t change a winning team.”
“We don’t change a General Secretary with experience, neither do we change any of the national executives with the wherewithal to deliver. We need ‘Adwenekεseε’, we need experienced drivers to drive the party to its destination of victory. We don’t need a learner. We should eschew self-interest because the pathway towards the elections is not all smooth,” he said.
Options
In his opinion, while a new crop of leadership may be okay, the NPP cannot have a total set of new national executives like a flagbearer, General Secretary, National Chairman, National Organiser, among others, to face the opposition NDC’s Asiedu Nketia and co “who have been entrenched for years”.
He observed that the 2024 elections would be fiercely contested. However, in his estimation, the NPP will walk out victorious in continuing with the good works done so far.
“Every election is not going to be an easy thing. For instance, even class prefect, school prefect, SRC elections are not a walk in the park…And truth is, it is not only the flagbearers that struggle to scoop power for the party; it is a collective effort. That is why we must have all hands on deck, and that is why the election of these national executives cannot be underestimated,” he stated.
Kwesi Botchway Jnr, who doubles as the special aide to NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, added that “If we want to deliver this mantra of ‘breaking the 8’ in 2024, then I think that we should do a lot of soul-searching and focus on hard work”.
That, he indicated, is important in redefining NPP structures to deliver in terms of party administration and political strategy, to mobilise and re-energise the base of the party for an effective campaign.
Advice
He therefore admonished delegates and party faithful to pick national executive officers and also a presidential candidate with the vision and confidence to defend the NPP’s record.
These officers, he said, should be able to give as much as they can take, and present a vision that builds on the gains so far chalked. “In addition, they must have the courage to admit what needs to be fixed, and the integrity to inspire the majority of Ghanaians,” he stressed.
To his end, he urged all party delegates and, for that matter, Ghanaians to continue to have confidence in the Akufo-Addo administration, as it navigates the nation to a rebound, emphasising that “the NPP and Akufo-Addo government can achieve that feat because it has a track-record of doing so”.
