The Leader of the Legal Greens Association (LGA), Festus Martey, has called on law students and young professionals, irrespective of their political affiliation, whether NDC or NPP, to remain committed to political party structures while pursuing excellence in their professional careers. He stressed that active participation in politics requires patience, loyalty, and long-term engagement.
He made the call during the 2026 Law Students’ Network (LSN) Leadership and Law Series held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the ISSER Conference Centre, University of Ghana, Legon. The event was held under the theme, “Beyond the Classroom: Winning in Law and Politics”.
Mr. Martey recounted his early involvement in campus politics, describing how his political identity was shaped during his university years through associations, friendships, and competitive student leadership activities. He noted that while many of his contemporaries transitioned into active partisan politics after school, others pursued careers in the corporate world.
According to him, such divergent paths highlight the importance of individual choice and timing in political engagement, adding that political ambition must be balanced with professional discipline and career growth.
“I was part of a competing team… and after school, some went into politics while others went into corporate organisations. I am a corporate leader, and I am proud of what I have achieved,” he said, noting that he still maintains a strong interest in politics despite his corporate commitments.
Mr. Martey also reflected on early tensions and alliances formed during his student political days, indicating that relationships built in university often extend into national political and professional spaces.
He further encouraged students to be intentional about their political participation, stressing that loyalty and consistency within party structures are key to long-term influence and opportunity.
“The best way to join a party is to be active when the party is not in power. That is where you can show commitment and work,” he stated.
He argued that political parties often provide greater opportunities for growth and recognition when they are in opposition, adding that dedication during such periods strengthens one’s credibility and future prospects within the party.
He called on law students and young political enthusiasts to remain loyal and actively committed to their political parties, especially during periods when those parties were in opposition.
According to him, political engagement should not be driven solely by access to power or government positions, but by consistent involvement, discipline, and long-term ideological commitment.
Mr. Martey urged students who align with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain active, committed, and disciplined in their engagement, emphasising that political success is built over time and not achieved overnight.
He further noted that political fortunes are cyclical, reminding students that no party remains in power indefinitely. According to him, sustained loyalty and hard work are essential for those who hope to play meaningful roles when their preferred party returns to government.
“Be diligent to your party, be committed, and one day when your party comes to power, your efforts will not be forgotten,” he said.
Mr. Martey advised the students to remain focused on their legal studies while also embracing leadership opportunities, adding that the combination of professional excellence and political engagement can position them for future leadership roles in both law and governance.
