The leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on media organisations to contextualise conversations in the Ghanaian media landscape for accelerated development.
The NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, made the call yesterday when the party’s communications directorate paid a working visit to the Despite Media Group.
He explained that there is a need for media outlets to have a broader conversation on contextualizing the current global economic conditions on the Ghana setting.
“The media should place and put some of these conversations in context. The media should use their programmes to tell how the global economy is experiencing the deepest downturn in the post–World War II period, as the financial crisis rapidly spreads around the world,” he said.
He urged the media to contextualise these issues on their programmes in sending the right signal that Ghana is no exception so far as the global crisis is concerned.
“A large number of advanced economies have fallen into recession, and economies in the rest of the world have slowed abruptly. Global trade and financial flows are shrinking, while output and employment losses mount. Credit markets remain frozen as borrowers are engaged in a drawn-out de-leveraging process and banks struggle to improve their financial health. The media should tell stories on ongoing economic crisis sweeping through the world,” he added.
Playing field
Mr Ahiagbah also stressed the need to set the Ghanaian agenda right, saying there is the need to report fairly on what is happening in and around the world, and create a level playing field for all political parties.
He also emphasised the need for journalists to be apolitical in the discharge of their duties, adding “a responsible media system, informing and teaching the citizenry, should help democracy move toward its ideal state”.
That, he said, requires of journalists to be fair and objective in their reportage regarding issues of national interest.
He also urged journalists to demonstrate neutrality, adhere to ethics of the journalistic profession devoid of political biases and pursuit of personal interests, but work to help strengthen the country’s democratic dispensation.
He thanked Despite Media Group for their role in strengthening the country’s democratic dispensation.
The team
Accompanying Mr Ahiagbah were some of the Deputy Communication Directors, including George Krobea Asante, Ernest Owusu Bempah, Kamal Deen and Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen.
The rest were Nana Ayimadu Bekoe, who is in charge of Deployment at the NPP Communication Directorate; Emmanuel Yaw Mensah, Administrator of the Directorate; Alexandra Akwasi Aquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda; and Samuel Ayepeh, former MP for Ayensuano.
The team, after visiting UTV, Peace FM, Neat FM and Okay FM, interacted with the hosts and the panelists. They also took the opportunity to meet with the management of the Despite Media Group to discuss some pertinent issues.
