NPP Must Unite Now: Factionalism Will Kill Us If We Don’t Kill It

The time has come for us in the New Patriotic Party to speak the truth to ourselves.

If we want to return to power in 2028, we cannot continue on this path of division, suspicion and selective silence. The NDC is not defeating us – we are defeating ourselves.

1. The Factionalism Must Stop

We went into the 2024 election divided. We have come out of the election even more divided. Camps, loyalties to individual flagbearer hopefuls, old grudges from appointments and primaries – this is what is consuming us while the NDC consolidates.

Let it be clear: No one is bigger than the NPP. Not a former president, not a former minister, not a flagbearer aspirant. The party gave us all a platform. Without the NPP, none of us is relevant in national politics.

If we continue to operate as Team A versus Team B, we will all lose together. The Ghanaian voter does not care about our internal camps. They care about a united opposition that can hold government accountable.

2. Our Communication Must Be Consistent

One of the biggest failures in our last years in government was inconsistent communication. That failure has followed us into opposition.

Today, one leading member says one thing, another says a different thing, and a third says nothing at all. We contradict each other on radio, we fight each other on TV, and we wash our dirty linen on social media. How can Ghanaians trust us to govern Ghana when we cannot even govern our own message?

We need a disciplined, consistent, and coordinated communication front. When we agree on a position to constructively criticize the NDC government, every communicator, every MP, every leading member must speak to that position.

3. The Loud Silence of Some Leading Members

This is the most painful part.

When a few brave leading members are on the frontline, constructively criticizing the NDC government on the economy, on galamsey, on the cost of living, on their failed promises – where are the rest of our leading members?

Why are some of our big names suddenly quiet? Why have they lost their voices in opposition when they were so loud in government?

We, the grassroots and loyal supporters of the party, are forced to ask a difficult question: Is it because their hands are not clean?

Are some of our leading members refusing to speak because they are afraid that if they attack the NDC, the NDC will open their own files from our time in government? Are they silent because of deals they made, contracts they supervised, or things they did wrong during the NPP government?

If your hands are clean, you will have the boldness of a lion to defend the party and attack the opponent. If you know you did nothing wrong, why are you hiding?

We cannot have leaders who only want to enjoy the benefits of the NPP when we are in power, but disappear when it is time to do the hard work in opposition.

The Way Forward

1. The National Executives must call a true unity meeting. Not a photo-opportunity, but a frank, closed-door meeting where we confront factionalism.

2. The flagbearer must call every supporters to order. Our personal ambitions cannot be more important than the survival of the party.

3. We must empower our communication directorate and make it an offence to publicly contradict the official party line.

We love the NPP. That is why we are speaking. We have two (2) years to fix this party and present a united front to Ghanaians. If we fail to unite now, we will not have a party to even contest with in 2028.

United we stand. Divided we fall.
