The Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party branch in the United Kingdom, Richard Gyamfi, has called on the youth of the party to put their shoulders to the wheel and focus on retaining political power for the party in the 2024 elections.
According to him, the NPP youth wing has so much talent from which Ghana will be the ultimate beneficiary, should the party be given another mandate in the next election.
He made the call over the weekend at the NPP Youth Forum held in the UK.
Harnessing talents
“We have fantastic communicators. We have excellent mobilizers. We have talents who are innovators and creators. I am reiterating this point to showcase the fact that our strength, if harnessed well, could lead us to win the battle ahead of us,” he stated.
Mr Gyamfi, popularly known as ‘Youth Jesus’, further urged the youth in the party to eschew any form of conduct that undermines party unity. He also entreated the leadership of the party to give the youth the opportunity to serve in building them for tomorrow.
“The battle for election 2024 will be a fight for the soul of our nation and that of our party. But how do we win this battle with a divided front? How do we win this battle if many of the people we struggled with feel neglected? How do we win this battle if the youth in our party and the country feel that there are no opportunities for them? How do we win this battle if there is a growing perception that we are the same as the NDC? How do we win this battle if we are always playing catch up with the NDC when it comes to communication?” he asked.
Achievements
He mentioned that the youth wing of the party in UK had over the last four years chalked some successes, including the university visitation project which saw the wing touring various universities across the United Kingdom, leading to nearly 350 registered TESCON UK members.
“We have held several business-oriented meetings over the years. One such meeting was the collaboration with the State Housing Company, which has resulted in business opportunities for some of our members,” he added.
He further stated that during the height of the pandemic, NPP UK, led by Chairman Kwaku Nkansah, set up Covid-19 fund to support the needy.
He recalled: “In the 2020 campaign, the NPP UK youth wing alone spent overall, including individual travel expenses, about £50,000 to support the campaign. We supported the national youth wing with 4000 customised T-shirts, and with the help of our Youth Patron, Andy Owusu, we donated 20,000 NPP-branded air fresheners to support the campaign at a price of £10,000.”
Present at the forum included the Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia; Papa Owusu Ankomah, Ghana’s High Commissioner to UK & Ireland; Francis Asenso-Boakye, Works Housing Minister; and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Information Minister.
Others were Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Youth Organiser; Alex Dadey, Executive Director, KGL Group of Companies; Kingsley Agyemang, Registrar of Scholarships; Kwabena Ampofo Appiah, MD State Housing; Pius Enam Hadidze, CEO of National Youth Authority; Justin Kodua, CEO of Youth Employment Agency; Jerry Ahmed Shaib, CEO Coastal Development Authority; and Akwasi Agyeman, CEO Tourism Authority.
