The Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has advised Members of Parliament (MPs) who lost in the governing New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries to continue working hard for the party, and reject any thinking or pressure from other quarters to consider running as independent candidates in their respective constituencies.
According to the veteran politician, going to Parliament is not the only means through which one can serve or develop his constituency.
He added that the NPP does not serve individuals but rather the party, and urged all NPP members to put the supreme interest of the party first before their personal interest.
Mr Osafo-Maafo was speaking at Akwatia on Sunday during a campaign tour to the area, as part of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s three-day working visit to the Eastern Region.
The Senior Minister’s call follows rumours that the NPP MP for Akwatia, Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, was preparing the grounds to run as an independent parliamentary candidate for the 2020 general election.
False rumours
The Senior Minister described as false, the rumours that Ama Sey was going to contest the Akwatia seat as an independent parliamentary candidate.
“I have personally contacted Ama and asked her if what was going on is true. I asked her if it is true that she will be contesting the Akwatia seat as an independent candidate. But she said it’s all false.
“So, I don’t believe she will lie to me. Let us all rally behind the new parliamentary candidate and vote for him to make sure the NPP retains this seat to maintain and increase our numbers in parliament,” he disclosed.
He noted that Ama Sey had served the party well and that the party will not reject her because of her defeat in the primaries.
He recounted the hurdle Ama Sey had to go through in annexing the seat from the NDC’s Baba Jamal, and assured her that so long as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo remains President, her due shall be offered her.
“We are all aware how she has served this party so well. We will also support her. But the thing is going to Parliament is not the only way to help your constituency or party. So, for now, on your ballot paper, just thumb print on wherever you see the NPP logo. The personality doesn’t matter; we are all one, we are all from the same womb,” he urged supporters of the MP.
