The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has called on media professionals to uphold high ethical standards and responsible journalism to promote transparency and accountability in the management and the use of petroleum revenues.
The call was made during a media engagement session held on Saturday, 16th May, 2026 following the launch of the 2025 PIAC Annual Report.
Speaking at the engagement, PIAC Chairman, Mr. Richard Ellimah emphasized the critical role the media plays in promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness, particularly within Ghana’s petroleum revenue management sector.
”However, journalists and media practitioners should remain committed to accuracy, fairness, balance, and professionalism in their reportage”, he stated.
Also, he noted that while the media remains a powerful tool for public education and accountability, misinformation, sensationalism, and unverified reporting continue to pose significant challenges to national development and public trust.
Touching on the role of the media to enhance accountability in the management of petroleum revenues, Mr. Ellimah, called on journalists to engage more closely with PIAC to report on the committee’s findings and recommendations to keep the public informed and also hold public officials accountable.
The engagement formed part of activities of PIAC following the presentation of the 2025 PIAC Annual Report, which assesses the management and utilization of Ghana’s petroleum revenues and provides recommendations aimed at improving accountability in the sector.
Media practitioners then reaffirmed their commitment to ethical journalism in promoting, informed public discourse and national development especially in the management and the use of petroleum revenues.
