The residents of Sekesua, in the Upper Manya District of the Eastern Region, have called on the government to necessitate the completion of the Community Day Senior High School (E-block), which started under the erstwhile previous Mahama administration.
According to them, the district currently has only one SHS. Completing the E-block will, therefore, enable the area to have improved access to second cycle education.
Some residents who spoke with the Daily Statesman bemoaned the fact that they were being deprived of a lot of investment opportunities which the school would bring, when completed. They stated that when construction work started, it provided the community with a lot of job opportunities for the youth.
Theft and assurance
The project, which is about 65% complete, has been stalled, and hopes of residents community hosting such an edifice is waning after the project constructor, Wilglob Ghana Limited, packed and left the building site on Sunday, March 13, 2022 following the stealing of some building materials from the site.
The identified stolen building materials included 3,000 pieces of cyber wood, 1,200 pieces of plain boards, 3,700 pieces of five inches blocks, iron rods, PVC pipes, boxes of nails, among others.
The District Chief Executive of the area, Joe Sam, said he had received numerous complaints from the residents about the project. He assured them that he had forwarded the complaints to the appropriate quarters for swift action.
According to him, he has received words of assurance from the central government to facilitate the completion of project.
The DCE noted that the project, when completed, would increase access to education in the district, adding that it would also entice the youth who complete JHS and have no motivation for furthering their education to enroll in such schools.
“The project is not a bad thing, because it was creating jobs for the community members, but the idea behind it. You ask, is it a long term project, because maybe it is just going to be a day SHS and then how many people are living in that community?” he quizzed.
