The Ministry of Roads and Highways has dismissed claims that government is re-introducing road tolls in the country after suspending same.
The claims followed the announcement by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, that government intended to toll some new road constructed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
However, a statement signed and issued by the Head of Public Relations at the Roads Ministry, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, insisted that government did not intend to re-introduce the road tolls.
Clarity
The statement further indicated that the government would use innovative means to finance road projects in the country for the betterment of the motoring public.
“The Ministry wishes to state categorically that the government has not reinstated toll collection across the country. We further wish to clarify that the Finance Minister’s reference to tolls in the budget review was in respect of PPP road projects only,” portions of the statement said.
It added: “The Ministry wishes to reassure the public that the government will continue to use innovative means to finance road projects across the country.”
