The Director-General of the Social Security and Insurance Trust (SSNIT), John Ofori-Tenkorang, has said what his organisation offers is the best form of pensions scheme anyone can get.
He explained that the SSNIT scheme is a contract, and, therefore, pensioners get whatever they are legislated to get, stressing that “you will get it whether SSNIT investment is doing well or not.”
“The SSNIT scheme is the best that you can ever get anywhere else as far as pensions are concerned. If you don’t join to contribute, you are harming yourself,” he said.
Speaking at the 2022 GNAT Investment Forum yesterday in Accra, Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang cautioned the public against the continuous narrative that ‘SSNIT is not good’.
According to him, this has paved the way for people to prevent their employers from fulfilling their SSNIT obligations to them.
He said his outfit is rolling out sensitization exercises in the semi-informal sector and the general informal sector to make the citizenry understand that “the SSNIT scheme is the basic pillar for pensions and retirement planning in the country, hence the need to take advantage of it.”
Onboarding process
Speaking to the media after the event, Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang hinted of plans to roll out an exercise to allow people to join the scheme easily.
“In the next couple of months, SSNIT is going to do a general rollout of an easy onboarding process where we swipe the Ghana Card and you are automatically a SSNIT contributor. We will also roll out various electronic platforms that allow people to make contributioins to us, and pay their SSNIT without leaving their places of work,” he said.
“The future for the SSNIT contributor is very exciting because we’ll make it easy for them to business with us, and also the transparency is going to increase,” he added.
