The Omanhene of Dormaa Traditional Area, Osaagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, are among a host of dignitaries expected to grace the official launch of a hundred-million-cedi endowment fund for the Sunyani Technical University (STU) this Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the institution’s main auditorium.
Several Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, the academia, businessmen, alumni and many others will all converge at STU for this event.
The endowment fund, which is expected to raise at least Ghc 100 million each year, is primarily meant to anchor the implementation of the university’s 40-year Master Plan launched a year ago.
A key component in the Master Plan is the construction of major infrastructural projects on campus to give the institution a face-lift and strategically position it as a centre of excellence, especially in the area of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, which is the niche area of the University.
A source at the university told our correspondent that the occasion would also coincide with the 14th congregation of the institution and the outdooring of its 55th anniversary celebrations.
When our team visited the university’s main campus yesterday, it was observed that some rehabilitations works were busily taking place on some structures, especially around the main entrance and the administration block, ahead of the big event.
History
It all started in 1967 as Sunyani Technical Institute, and offered a great opportunity for Middle School leavers and later Junior Secondary School graduates to undergo hands-on training in Craft/Inter-mediate block-laying and concreting, carpentry and Joinery, Furniture Craft as well as Painting and Decoration.
Other programmes offered included Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering Craft, Practice, Welding and Fabrication, Cookery for the Catering Industry Part 1 & 2 and Business Studies (Accounting and Secretarial options).
In 1997, the institution was upgraded into a Polytechnic following the government’s decision to lay some more emphasis on Technical/Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and as a result it became known as the Sunyani Polytechnic, running a wide range of tertiary, non-tertiary and certificate programmes.
In 2016, it was converted from Polytechnic to a Technical University, and given the mandate to provide higher education and award Degrees, Diploma and other certificates in Engineering, Science and Technology-based disciplines as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Applied Arts and related disciplines as stated in the Technical Universities Act, 2016, Act 922 as amended in the Technical Universities (amendment) Act, 2018, Act 974).
