A Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has emphasised the pivotal role of technology and innovation for the development of Ghana’s mining sector.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Intertek Minerals Photonassay Laboratory yesterday in Tarkwa, Mr Duker underlined the transformative potential of embracing technological advancements.
He explained that the PhotoAssay technology is a chemical-free and non-destructive method for measuring gold concentrations in samples. It is a revolutionary analytical technique with speed, precision and safety in gold analysis.
The Deputy Minister indicated that one of its standout features is the ability to deliver results much faster than conventional methods, a capability that can significantly enhance decision-making in mining operations.
He, therefore, expressed confidence that it would effectively address the challenges associated with assaying gold.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that the fourth industrial era hinges on technological innovations and warned that nations failing to adopt these innovations would fall behind.
He commended the current government’s unwavering commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technology into the country’s mining sector.
“Ghana’s mineral wealth, which is the bedrock of its development, is currently being explored and exploited by numerous projects and large-scale mining operations. These endeavours receive vital support from companies providing engineering and mine support services, including assaying services, with Intertek Minerals being a prominent player in this sector,” he stated.
Benefits
Mr Mireku Duker also touched on the substantial benefits a technology-driven mining sector would bring to Ghana’s economy.
Specifically, he emphasised the importance of accurate mineral valuation facilitated by a proficient assaying laboratory.
The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, lauded Intertek Minerals for its credibility and competence, affirming that their presence would greatly benefit the country.
Mr. John Fowler, Senior Vice President Minerals and Exploration and Productions, expressed Intertek Minerals’ excitement in introducing PhotonAssay technology to their Tarkwa laboratory. He emphasised their commitment to excellence and support for the gold industry in West Africa.
The Director General of Ghana Geological Survey Authority, Isaac Mwinbelle, acknowledged Intertek Minerals Ltd.’s crucial role in mineral exploration in Ghana, especially for gold and lithium.
He noted that Intertek’s Tarkwa site had become a hub for mineral exploration in West Africa, marking a significant investment to bolster the mining supply chain in Ghana and other West African sub regions.
