The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has condemned a shooting incident that occurred at its district office in Garu, Upper East Region, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuring five others. The incident took place on Monday, October 20, 2025, when unidentified gunmen on motorbikes attacked the NHIA office, firing indiscriminately.
The NHIA expressed deep sorrow and shock over the incident. In a statement signed by its Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the Authority denounced the act of violence and conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured.
It noted that the NHIA was working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Support for victims
The Authority said a management team had been dispatched to Garu to provide support to the bereaved families, the injured, and affected staff. It has also announced a review of its security arrangements across all regional and district offices to enhance the safety and protection of staff, members, and property nationwide.
The NHIA further urged staff and the general public to remain calm as investigations continue. The Authority prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of its staff and clients, and it is working to ensure that those responsible for the incident are held accountable.
Incident
According to eyewitnesses, four armed men on two motorbikes stormed the NHIA office, shooting at staff and visitors. The victims included a staff member of the NHIA, a headteacher, and a local chief. The attackers reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, leaving behind a trail of destruction and panic.
