The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana (UTFSHS Ghana) engaged students at the Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School (Bolga Girls SHS) on the significance of the upcoming 2024 general elections, urging them to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The engagement, led by prominent academic figures Wilson Dabuo from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and Mohammed Tawfiq from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), was a vibrant discussion on the importance of educational policies and the impact they have on the development of students. The session, which aimed to raise awareness about political decisions affecting education, especially the Free SHS initiative, was met with enthusiasm by the students.
The lecturers emphasized the achievements of the NPP government in providing free education to all students at the Senior High School level. The discussion also touched on the broader contributions of the NPP government towards improving infrastructure, educational resources, and opportunities for students across the country.
Wilson Dabuo, speaking to the gathered students, reiterated the importance of voting for leadership that prioritizes education. He mentioned that NPP’s policies, particularly the Free SHS program, have played a significant role in reducing the financial burden on parents and ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education. Dabuo emphasized that the continuation of these policies is crucial for the sustainable development of the country.
Mohammed Tawfiq also addressed the students, urging them to consider the long-term impact of their votes on the future of education in Ghana. He emphasized that the NPP’s commitment to education, especially in the rural areas, is unmatched. Tawfiq cited various programs introduced by the NPP government to support students in their academic pursuits, including scholarships, the provision of modern learning facilities, and the expansion of the Free SHS policy to ensure that no student is left behind.
The engagement at Bolga Girls SHS was part of a nationwide campaign by University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana, aimed at mobilizing students, particularly those in Senior High Schools, to understand the importance of their vote in securing a brighter future for Ghana.
The students were encouraged to vote for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP, as the party’s policies align with their future educational and professional aspirations. The event left a lasting impression on the students, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the insights shared and pledged to participate actively in the electoral process.
