President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday received the outgoing British High Commissioner, Iain Walker, and the German Ambassador, Christoph Retzaff, who had come to bid him farewell at the Jubilee House.
Addressing Mr Walker, President Akufo-Addo congratulated him on his outstanding tour of duty in Ghana, adding that people who have had the opportunity to come across him would attest to that fact.
“I want to appreciate the work that you have done here. Very important people from your country have visited us for the period that you have been here,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo said Ghana and Britain history go way back to some 300 years, adding that the British played a very important role in the Ghanaian society.
He stressed that a lot of similarities exist between the two countries, including the system of Parliament and statutory laws.
Friend of Ghana
President Akufo-Addo said the outgoing High Commissioner, during his time, saw to the establishment of the UK-Ghana Business Council, saying that was a very good step.
“We know that you are friend of our country. The energy and concern that you brought to bear in your wok made it clear to us that you have the best interest of our country at heart,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Mr Iain, for his part, thanked the President and the people of Ghana for their warm reception during his time. He said he had enjoyed his time in Ghana and was optimistic that his successor will continue from where he left off and continue with the good things that exist between the two countries.
Mr Iain said he was leaving the country with some good memories and will continue to do his bit, irrespective of where he finds himself, to see to the good relationship between Ghana and Britain.
“I am grateful for the experience,” he said.
