The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims suggesting it disenfranchised the people of Santrokofi, Apkafu, Lolobi and Lipke (SALL) from voting in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
This follows an audio of the president of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, accusing the EC of disenfranchising the people of SALL. Mr. Cudjoe claimed the EC was being brazenly dishonest.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, he stated: “It is a matter of public record that in the evening of 6th December 2020, the Electoral Commission issued a public statement to the effect that voters in the SALL Traditional areas could not vote in the Parliamentary elections scheduled for 7th December 2020.”
Falsehood
But in response, the Electoral Commission described the claims as “false and without basis.” A statement released by the EC yesterday said it was unfortunate IMANI Africa continued to peddle falsehoods about the Commission.
“The Electoral Commission has received an audio circulating on social media in which the President of Imani accuses the Commission of disenfranchising the people of Santrokofi, Apkafu, Lolobi, and Lipke (SALL).
“We wish to state categorically that his accusations are false and without basis. The Commission never disenfranchised the good people of the newly created Guan Constituency. It is not in our interest to do so,” the EC statement said.
The EC emphasized that Mr. Cudjoe’s narrative that the Commission had disenfranchised the people of SALL, now the Guan constituency, is false. It, therefore, urged the public to verify information put out by IMANI Africa with the Commission for the truth and the facts.
In the statement, the EC revealed that to enable the public to ascertain the truth, it had attached the letter from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to the Commission requesting it to create the new Constituency and the Commission’s letter to the Attorney General seeking to create the new Constituency.
