The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, has directed the Minerals Commission to suspend the operations of Jocyderk Logistics Limited, pending the outcome of investigations into last Thursday’s tragedy that hit the Apeate community, near Bogoso in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
Maxam Ghana Limited, according to preliminary investigations, sub-contracted Jocyderk Logistics Limited, a company registered by the Minerals Commission, to undertake clearing, warehousing and transportation of explosives, to transport the said explosives on its behalf.
Maxam Ghana Limited has already been shut down by the Minerals Commission, acting on the orders of the Minister.
A letter from the Minister to the COE of the Minerals Commission said the suspension of the operations of Jocyderk Logistics Limited is part of the measures to ensure impartial investigations into the circumstances leading to the accident.
This is in accordance with Article 297 of the Constitution, and Regulation 27 of the Minerals and Mining (explosives) Regulations, 2012 (L.I 2177).
Jocyderk Logistics Limited, by this directive, is precluded from all mining and mine support services, pending the outcome of the investigations.
Rebuilding
Meanwhile, the State Housing Company (SHC) has started mapping out plans to reconstruct buildings in the community which were destroyed by last Thursday’s explosion.
The SHC’s move follows a directive by the government, which was announced by the Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, when he visited the accident scene to commiserate with the victims of the accident.
The SHC technical team, led by its Western Regional Head, Mr. Kingsley Hagan, have already visited the town to enumerate the houses and mark them for reconstruction.
