Angel FM/TV journalist Kwadwo Baffour Atuahene has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight high-ranking government officials on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Speaking during a breaking news segment hosted by Kwadwo Dickson on Angel FM, Atuahene attributed the fatal incident to the devastating effects of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. He indicated that the menace had reached a national crisis level that demands swift and decisive action from the Presidency.
“The President should use this as an opportunity to declare a state of emergency because of galamsey. The galamsey menace is even more dangerous than the Bawku conflict,” he added.
He argued that while the Bawku conflict remains a serious concern, it is largely confined to a specific region. Galamsey, on the other hand, he said poses a broader, more systemic threat to national stability, environmental safety, and the lives of Ghanaians across the country.
“The Bawku conflict is a regional issue, but illegal mining is a national emergency. If the President does not declare a state of emergency in response to these deaths, there is nothing that can be done to stop galamsey,” he stated.
He cautioned that failure to take drastic action now would render all efforts to curb galamsey ineffective, further endangering lives and undermining governance.
