A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Ohene Agyapong, has clarified that his outspoken nature should not be mistaken for troublemaking. According to him, his frankness and willingness to speak truth to power are driven by his genuine commitment to truth, justice and his unwavering love for the NPP and Ghana.
Speaking during his just-ended ‘Unity Tour’ of the Upper East Region, Mr. Agyapong emphasised that he had no intention of creating division or animosity. Rather, his focus remains on promoting fairness and reconciliation among party members.
He said his public remarks were often borne out of conviction rather than confrontation. “I am not a troublesome person. I only speak when silence would betray the truth. When injustice becomes a norm, speaking up is not trouble, it is duty. I speak the truth because I love the NPP, and I love Ghana. My loyalty to this party and this country is what drives my passion,” he stressed
Mr. Agyapong also told delegates and supporters to remain steadfast in defending the values that had defined the NPP since its inception.
Defending soul of NPP
The NPP flagbearer hopeful reminded them that the NPP was founded on the pillars of truth, freedom, and justice, principles he said must never be compromised for political expediency.
“Our forebears built this tradition on truth and courage. We cannot destroy it with deceit and intimidation,” the NPP flagbearer aspirant stated.
Recounting what he described as irregularities during the party’s last internal elections, he noted that several constituencies recorded questionable figures that undermined the democratic spirit of the party.
“In some constituencies, I had sixty votes, yet the records said five—even zero. Is this the democracy our forefathers fought for?”, he asked further.
Unity built on justice
The NPP flagbearer aspirant expressed dissatisfaction with how certain processes were managed. However, Mr. Agyapong emphasised that his focus was not on division but on promoting reconciliation through fairness.
“I do not seek to divide this party. I seek to remind us who we are. Unity without justice is false peace. We must stand by the rule of law and protect the dignity and freedom of our people,” he added.
He condemned alleged threats and intimidation targeted at his supporters in parts of the north, calling instead for tolerance and respect for every delegate’s voice.
“We can only move forward when every member feels protected and every delegate’s choice is respected. That is how we build a strong NPP,” he added.
Statesman’s creed
Mr. Agyapong addressed perceptions that his forthrightness makes him aggressive or divisive. “My passion for truth is not troublemaking, it is statesmanship. My refusal to stay silent is not rebellion, it is patriotism. I am for peace, but peace must not silence justice. I am for unity, but not at the expense of truth,” he further stated.
He also reminded delegates that true leadership is not defined by comfort or conformity, but by the courage to speak truth, unite through justice, and defend what is right even when it is unpopular.
“I am not a troublesome person. People often misunderstand my passion and boldness. When I speak strongly, it is not because I want to create confusion or insult anyone. It is because I want things done right, both in our party and in Ghana as a whole,” he further reiterated.
